Emerging geochemical evidence suggests that the atmosphere-ocean system underwent a significant decrease in O 2 content following the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), leading to a mid-Proterozoic ocean (ca. 2.0-0.8 Ga) with oxygenated surface waters and predominantly anoxic deep waters. The extent of mid-Proterozoic seafloor anoxia has been recently estimated using mass-balance models based on molybdenum (Mo), uranium (U), and chromium (Cr) enrichments in organic-rich mudrocks (ORM). Here, we use a temporal compilation of concentrations for the redox-sensitive trace metal rhenium (Re) in ORM to provide an independent constraint on the global extent of mid-Proterozoic ocean anoxia and as a tool for more generally exploring how the marine geochemical cycle of Re has changed through time. The compilation reveals that mid-Proterozoic ORM are dominated by low Re concentrations that overall are only mildly higher than those of Archean ORM and significantly lower than many ORM deposited during the ca. 2.22-2.06 Ga Lomagundi Event and during the Phanerozoic Eon. These temporal trends are consistent with a decrease in the oceanic Re inventory in response to an expansion of anoxia after an interval of increased oxygenation during the Lomagundi Event. Mass-balance modeling of the marine Re geochemical cycle indicates that the mid-Proterozoic ORM with low Re enrichments are consistent with extensive seafloor anoxia. Beyond this agreement, these new data bring added value because Re, like the other metals, responds generally to lowoxygen conditions but has its own distinct sensitivity to the varying environmental controls. Thus, we can broaden our capacity to infer nuanced spatiotemporal patterns in ancient redox landscapes. For example, despite the still small number of data, some mid-Proterozoic ORM units have higher Re enrichments that may reflect a larger oceanic Re inventory during transient episodes of ocean oxygenation. An improved understanding of the modern oceanic Re cycle and a higher temporal resolution for the Re compilation will enable further tests of these hypotheses regarding changes in the surficial Re geochemical cycle in response to variations in atmosphere-ocean oxygenation. Nevertheless, the existing Re compilation and model results are in agreement with previous Cr, Mo, and U evidence for pervasively anoxic and ferruginous conditions in mid-Proterozoic oceans.

The Palaeoproterozoic Dhanjori Formation, eastern India is a terrestrial (dominantly fluvial) volcano-sedimentary succession. Basal conglomerate, coarse-grained sandstone, and shale rests directly on the granite basement and represents the distal fringe of an alluvial fan complex. Sieve, sheet flood, mass flow and alluvial channel and overbank deposits comprise the fan segment. The rest of the formation is entirely constituted by fining upward fluvial cycles. An event of basin tilting and volcanic eruption intervened and resulted a second phase of Dhanjori sedimentation, although the general fluvial depositional framework remained unaltered. The two members of the Dhanjori Formation display different paleocurrent trends related to fluvial response to basin tilting. In the lower member spatial variability in paleocurrent directions occurs as a consequence of fan development. Unlike the first phase, the second phase of fluvial deposition incorporates profuse volcanics and accompanying volcaniclastic deposits. These volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks might have locally blocked the river courses resulting in short-lived lacustrine deposition. Composition of the volcanics varies upward from ultramafic to mafic. The Dhanjori volcanism took place in an intracontinental rift setting as is evident from the interbedded terrestrial deposits. Interbedded volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks in different stratigraphic levels suggest episodic volcanic eruption. A semiarid paleoclimate is proposed and is consistent with development of an alluvial fan comprised of coarse clastic deposits.

a b s t r a c tIn significant contrast to other cratonic blocks of India, the Singhbhum cratonic successions record continuous depositional record from the Palaeoarchaean to Mesoproterozoic. Although the sedimentary facies characteristics and mode of stratigraphic sequence building of the Dhanjori and Chaibasa Formations are well known, sedimentary geochemistry, provenance and tectonic milieu of deposition of these two formations are hitherto unknown. The current manuscript presents geochemical and Sm-Nd isotopic data from the Dhanjori and Chaibasa Formations for the first time and combine previous sedimentological data with the goal to expand the framework for understanding the depositional and tectonic setting of these two formations. The Sm-Nd isotopic data for the Chaibasa clastics is unambiguous with respect to provenance. Average ε Nd (t = 2.2 Ga) = −0.8 ± 1.0 and average Nd model age (TDM) = 2.51 ± 0.08 Ga with average 147 Sm/ 144 Nd ratios = 0.1114 ± 0.0041 for phyllites and quartzites indicate an extremely homogeneous source signature consistent with a late Archaean "juvenile" crustal provenance, possibly a dominantly upper crustal provenance. The Sm-Nd isotopic data from the older Dhanjori Formation also indicate broadly similar provenance as comparable lithologies in the younger Chaibasa Formation. Our Sm-Nd isotopic data is entirely consistent with the previous sedimentological data and confirms a terrestrial, riftdominated tectonic setting for the Dhanjori Formation (proximal sources, poorly mixed provenance) and a marginal marine to offshore setting for the more homogeneous Nd isotopic signature of the Chaibasa Formation (distal sources, well mixed provenance).
