“… 1. Pre‐reproductive death: instances where females die before becoming functionally reproductive [long physiological maturation period (van Buskirk, 1987; Anholt, 1991), adult diapause (Popov & Veerman, 1996; Baer & Schmid‐Hempel, 2005; Kobayashi & Osakabe, 2009), migration events (Torres‐Vila & McNeil, 2001; Zhao et al., 2009), or limited access to resources essential for breeding (Ahnesjö et al., 2001)]. 2. Mating failure: instances where females become functionally reproductive adults but fail to mate due to lack of opportunity (Rhainds et al., 1995a; Sharov et al., 1995).…”

“…Leon‐Beck & Coll () revealed that Orius laevigatus (Fieber) females are monandrous and males of the species are polygamous. In contrast, Kobayashi & Osakabe () demonstrated that Orius sauteri (Poppius), Orius strigicollis (Poppius), and Orius nagaii Yasunaga females displayed multiple mating with several males. If the genus Orius includes both polyandrous and monandrous species, it is worthwhile to compare the mating systems of closely related species in order to help clarify the evolution of polyandry.…”

“…In Dunedin, not only did we observe several live nymphs and adults of both sexes, but also two copulating pairs at night, when temperatures were comparable to other sites (+3.3˚C). This suggests N. annulata is capable of continuous reproduction throughout the year, rather than mating seasonally, as is observed in many other insects (Kobayashi & Osakabe 2009;Tauber et al 1986).…”
