Pre-prosthetic surgery: Mandible

Abstract: Pre-prosthetic surgery is that part of oral and maxillofacial surgery which restores oral function and facial form. This is concerned with surgical modification of the alveolar process and its surrounding structures to enable the fabrication of a well-fitting, comfortable, and esthetic dental prosthesis. The ultimate goal of pre-prosthetic surgery is to prepare a mouth to receive a dental prosthesis by redesigning and smoothening bony edges.

“…Prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous mandible can be a delicate procedure when proper vestibule depth is absent. Because of the painful and prolonged healing following conventional vestibuloplasty, a laser vestibuloplasty with Erbium:YAG is recommended 6 . When used in oral soft tissue surgery, the Er:YAG laser targets the chromophore of water selectively instead of the extracellular matrix of collagen.…”

“…Vestibuloplasty (Clarke's technique) is described in the earlier literature as a comfortable and reliable technique for attaining sulcus depth. [ 2 3 4 ] It is indicated in case of completely edentulous ridges to create a betterment of anatomical sulcus length. We encountered an isolated shallow vestibule with dentition in anterior and posterior to the ridge.…”

“…The most frequently performed procedures include basic periodontal treatments (scaling, curettage), activities in the field of conservative dentistry (elimination of active cariouss lesions, endodontic treatment) or oral surgery, such as tooth extraction, elimination of pathology within hard and soft tissues or improvement of the quality of prosthetic area. [1][2][3][4][5] Appropriate preparation of the patient's oral cavity ensures an effective, long-term rehabilitation of the stomatognathic system. Depending on the prosthetic treatment plan, it is sometimes necessary to prepare additional tools routinely used by a specialist of another field of dentistry.…”
