Pre-operative hypoalbuminaemia predicts poor overall survival in rectal cancer: a retrospective cohort analysis

Abstract: BackgroundSerum albumin is a marker of nutrition and inflammation. It has recently emerged as a predictor of outcome after surgery for rectal cancer. Our aim was to evaluate if pre-operative serum albumin would predict survival after resection for rectal cancer.Method226 Patients with rectal cancer of all stages undergoing resection with curative intent were studied. Kaplan-Meier curves analysed survival based on a pre-operative albumin level of <35 g/L vs. >35 g/L. We sought for significant associations of su… Show more

“…PNI, which is calculated by serum albumin and peripheral lymphocyte counts, has easy access to and is easily assessed. Pretreatment serum albumin has been shown to be a good indicator for the evaluation of immunonutritional status in malignancies especially digestive system cancers . Tumor micro‐environment is composed of tumor cells and infiltrating immune cells, and the interaction becomes more and more closer with the development of solid tumors .…”

“…11,12,19,23,24,30,34,48,52 In 2 studies all patients received neoadjuvant (chemo-)radiation (497 cases). 23,48 In 7 studies some patients received neoadjuvant treatment (percentages of treated patients varying between 12.8% and 88.8%), which varied between short-schedule radiotherapy, long-schedule radiotherapy, or combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy (total 2575 cases, 1224 with and 1351 without radiotherapy).…”

“…Limitations of this study include selection bias inherent to the retrospective study design, which also precluded our ability to correlate measurements of skeletal muscle wasting or obesity with metrics of nutritional status such as albumin, 25,26 or functional measures of frailty such as handgrip strength or walking speed. Additionally, digital CT was unavailable for 244 patients treated with RC at our institution during the study period, as our institution is a referral center, thus preoperative imaging was frequently obtained at the patient's local or referring institution and not uniformly digitized.…”
