Pre‐mixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture treatment of pain induced by postoperative dressing change for perianal abscess: Study protocol for a randomized, controlled trial

Abstract: Aim This study aims to evaluate the safety and analgesic efficacy of pre‐mixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture treatment of pain induced by dressing change for perianal abscess. Design This protocol is a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial. Methods This study will be implemented in the Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Subjects enrolled in this study are hospitalized patients who suffered from moderate to severe pain due to dressing change after incision and drainage. Two hundred patients w… Show more

“…In particular, the perianal skin is delicate and has a rich distribution of nerves and blood vessels, making the area more sensitive to pain, which can have a serious impact on wound recovery and even on the recovery of anal function if not treated properly [ 3 , 4 ]. In response, some scholars [ 5 , 6 ] have shifted the focus of their research towards the protocol of postoperative care in anal surgery, trying to find scientific and feasible nursing measures to improve patients' symptoms of anal pain and defecation difficulties and to promote their prognosis in a comprehensive manner. It is thus clear that postoperative anal care measures are essential for a better recovery outcome.…”

“…e main methods of clinical treatment of perianal abscess include simple incision and drainage, disposable radical incision, thread-drawing therapy, and various drainage techniques [20,21]. VSD is a new cut surface treatment method with a smaller incision, requiring only a small radial incision of 1-2 cm, which can significantly reduce the degree of pain in patients [22].…”

“…Its analgesic principle is that the mixed gas enters the lung via the respiratory tract and then goes into the pulmonary circulation by diffusion. The mixture is then stabilized in the blood [ 11 15 ]. Finally, it acts as an analgesic role by stimulating the endorphin system and antagonizing the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor while retaining consciousness of behavioral management technology [ 11 ].…”
