Pre‐exposure of neuroblastoma cell line to pulsed electromagnetic field prevents H2O2‐induced ROS production by increasing MnSOD activity

Abstract: Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have been linked to increased risk of cancers and neurodegenerative diseases; however, EMFs can also elicit positive effects on biological systems, and redox status seems crucially involved in EMF biological effects. This study aimed to assess whether a short and repeated pulsed EMF (PEMF) could trigger adaptive responses against an oxidative insult in a neuronal cellular model. We found that a 40 min overall (four times a week, 10 min each) pre-exposure to PEMF did not affect maj… Show more

“…In our experiments, the exposure of PC12 and SH‐SY5Y cells to PEMFs improved cellular response against a noxious insult such as hypoxia mainly through a ROS level reduction. These data are in agreement with those found in human neuroblastoma cell line where PEMFs prevents H 2 O 2 ‐induced ROS production by increasing superoxide dismutase activity (Osera et al, ). These data might suggest that ROS‐targeting defence mechanisms are activated by PEMFs and that this activation could counteract the hypoxic insult.…”

“…PEMF for 24 h moderately inhibited the enhancement of caspase 3/7 activity induced by doxorubicin, although PEMF alone had no effect, which is similar to the results of a neuronal cellular model treated with PEMF (8). Since PEMF and doxorubicin co-treatment for 12 hours showed a slight-increment in caspase 3/7 activity, this combination might have the potential to enhance caspase 3/7 activities between 12 h and 24 h after the start of treatment, although these findings do not exclude the possibility of suppression by PEMF.…”

“…It has been well documented that exposure to H 2 O 2 triggers the rapid generation of ROS in various cell types [2729], including IPEC-J2 cells [23]. Accumulation of ROS and impairment of the antioxidant defense system by H 2 O 2 cause oxidative damage in cells [30].…”
