Pre-Column Derivatization HPLC Procedure for the Quantitation of Aluminium Chlorohydrate in Antiperspirant Creams Using Quercetin as Chromogenic Reagent

Abstract: This article describes the development and validation of a selective high-performance liquid chromatography method that allows, after liquid–liquid extraction and pre-column derivatization reaction with quercetin, the quantification of aluminium chlorohydrate in antiperspirant creams. Chromatographic separation was achieved on an XTerra MS C18 analytical column (150 × 3.0 mm i.d., particle size 5 μm) using a mobile phase of acetonitrile:water (15:85, v/v) containing 0.08 % trifluoroacetic acid at a flow rate o… Show more

“…There are several methods that can be used to determine aluminum in antiperspirant samples, including pre-column derivatization and HPLC-UV/Vis detection [18], flow injection analysis with spectrophotometric detection [19], and atomic absorption spectroscopy [20], among others. Most of these methods require the use of organic solvents or derivatization steps, which may cause harm to the operator and the environment.…”

“…Fluorometric detection based on the presence of lumogallion has gained a widespread acceptance due to its low detection limits and good selectivity to Al 3+ . 33 It has been routinely employed in separation science as a pre-column derivatization dye 34 or in plant chemistry 35 as aluminium tracing agent. Moreover, recent study carried out by Mold et al report the first use of lumogallion for the unequivocal determination of aluminium adjuvants in monocytic T helper 1 (THP-1) cell line.…”
