Pre‐Clinical Medical Students' Use of Motivational and Cognitive Study Strategies During Anatomy Learning: A Three‐Year Cross‐Sectional Survey

Abstract: Medical students' motivation and study strategies are crucial in determining academic performance. This study aimed to assess the motivation and learning strategies of medical students as well as their association with performance in anatomy examinations. The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, two focus group discussions, and students' current anatomy cumulative grade point average (cGPA) were used. Generally, the medical students strongly felt that anatomy is fundamental to the practice of medic… Show more

“…Intrinsic Value (IV) and SR, are among some of the student-dependent elements with potential to accelerate learning [ 8 ]. Consistent with previous data, our population presented very high IV score and high SR score [ 12 , 13 ]. Although the relationship with academic results shows conflicting results [ 12 14 ], in our cohort above-average students had statistically significant higher SR score.…”

“…In a study of anatomy learning strategies, most preclinical students relied on elaboration ahead of other cognitive strategies and lowest rated critical thinking, and relied more on resource management, effort, time, and regulation of the learning environment rather than the moderately rated peer learning and help seeking. Nevertheless, in focus groups, they reported that they often narrated or explained to each other what they understood from anatomy lectures, tutorials, and textbooks (Zilundu et al, 2021). In the present study, all students used online materials to prepare their presentations.…”

“…The focus group discussions were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data analysis followed Grounded Theory as spelled out previously (Zilundu et al, 2022). Grounded theory is an inductive, comparative methodology that offers orderly guiding principles used to gather, synthesize, analyze, and conceptualize qualitative data for theory construction that was developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967).…”

“…The researchers sat together and read successive focus group discussion responses searching for meanings, recognizable patterns, or ideas in the responses of participants that were relevant to motivation and study strategies used by the students in studying anatomy. Disagreements between researchers were resolved through discussion to reach a consensus as reported previously (Zilundu et al, 2022).…”
