Pre-Breeding Prospects of Lablab (Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet) Accessions in Tanzania: Morphological Characterization and Genetic Diversity Analysis

Abstract: Under-exploited crops such as Lablab purpureus are regarded a pathway towards alleviating the food and nutritional security in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed at evaluating the morpho-agronomic diversity present in 277 lablab accessions based on 38 morpho-agronomic traits. The experiment was laid out in an Augmented design across two main cropping seasons in Tanzania. Qualitative data was analysed using pivot tables. The Generalized Linear Model (PROC GLM), Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) and … Show more

“…Cluster analysis based on 14 quantitative traits grouped the accessions into four groups, with weak association between group membership and the place of origin. Variation between clusters meant that, for example, one cluster had more locules pod -1 and seeds pod -1 , and another had a greater number of pods and yield (Letting et al, 2022). Gene pools with 2 seeds per pod and 4 or more seeds per pod are the result of independent domestication events (Njaci et al, 2023).…”

“…The repeated material is the control from which the diversity of experimental errors is obtained while the tested clones are not repeated [13]. Many breeding studies have used augmented design due to limited planting material or a large number of materials tested such as chickpea [14], cassava [15], soybean [16] cowpea [17], wheat [18], lablab [19], and also garlic [20,21].…”
