“…There is evidence of glaciomarine conditions in the North Sea Basin during MIS 6 or 8 in the Fisher Formation (Gatliff et al, 1994), and other workers have suggested evidence of glaciation in the North Sea during MIS 8 (Beets et al, 2005). There is widespread evidence of large-scale lowland glaciation in Britain during MIS 12 (Lunkka, 1994;Lewis et al, 1999;Fish and Whiteman, 2001;Lee et al, 2006), and if the Ash Gill Member was deposited during MIS 12, it could easily have occurred during an early phase and later been overridden by advancing ice sheets.…”

“…With respect to the less abundant, but highly sensitive, indicator lithologies, there is an absence of rocks from Wales or southern England (except for one Greensand chert) and a persistent presence of igneous and metamorphic rocks typical of northern England, Scotland and Scandinavia. Likewise the percentage of opaque heavy minerals and the nonopaque heavy mineral assemblage is typical of Scandinavian sourced glaciogenic sediments (Table 5) (Perrin et al, 1979;Rose et al, 1992;Lewis et al, 1999). The presence in the lower part of the unit of diamicton clasts resembling Starston Till, which was deposited by a Scandinavian ice sheet (Mathers et al, 1987), reinforces the evidence for a Scandinavian provenance.…”

“…Leet Hill is the type site for this deposit. The Corton Sands are fine sands that outcrop in northeast Norfolk and north Suffolk (Bridge and Hopson, 1985;Hopson and Bridge, 1987;Lewis et al, 1999). They formed as distal glaciofluvial outwash from the Scandinavian ice sheet.…”

“…However, geochemical data is unable to extend the ice flow path westwards beyond the western-most Jurassic outcrop. Other lithological data from the till including Carboniferous and Triassic palynomorphs (Lee, 2003;Riding, 2008) and Carboniferous erratics (Lewis et al, 1999;Lee et al, 2004) enable the till flow path to be extended westwards indicating a Pennine ice source. In north Norfolk, the northern extent of this ice advance from the west is characterised by an extensive glaciotectonic overprint, that has deformed part of the underlying glacigenic sediment pile, and deposited a lower-level westerly derived chalky till (Banham and Ranson, 1965;Ehlers et al, 1987;Lee and Phillips, 2008;Phillips et al, 2008).…”
