Pratiques agricoles et épidémiologie du paludisme en zone soudano-sahélienne du Cameroun

Abstract: We have comparatively studied the dynamics of malaria transmission in the villages of Mokolo-Douvar located in the rural area with traditional agriculture and Gounougou irrigated rice area, in 2004 August and November and 2006 May and October, to assess vectors biting habits, and malaria inoculation rate and malaria parasite prevalence in cohort of children from 0 to 15 years. Mosquitoes were collected by landing catches on volunteers and by pyrethrum spray collections. A total of 5961 Anopheles were collected… Show more

“…This study further confirms the role of An. gambiae as the major malaria vector in the southern forested areas of Cameroon and Western Africa and more so in areas of intense large scale agricultural activities as reported previously [1,12,15,27-30]. The observed night biting cycles of the anophelines peaked generally between 10:00 pm and 02:00 am and did not deviate from the prototype described earlier by Gillies and De Meillon [19,29].…”

“…Although all of Cameroon is endemic for malaria, the level of endemicity greatly varies between the various eco-epidemiological zones depending on the vector species present and the permissiveness of the environment to support their breeding [6-11]. Therefore, the efficacy of anti-vector control for malaria would require requisite baseline information such that measures taken are readily adaptable to the local eco-epidemiological situation [12,13]. At least 45 Anopheles species have been reported in Cameroon, 14 of which are implicated in human malaria transmission with varying efficiencies.…”

“…The region population more than doubled during the last decades due in part to migration of population affected by droughts or displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency. Before LLINs scale-up in the country, malaria parasite prevalence in children of 1–15 years-old, was estimated to vary between 6.5–30.7% ( n = 655) during cross-sectional surveys in the health districts of Lagdo [46, 48]. The EIR was found to vary between 2.7–36.5 infected bites/person/month [49, 50].…”

“…The high frequencies of insecticide resistance mutations and genes in members of these species’ complexes coupled with their vectorial capacities and competences make them the most abundant and widespread mosquitoes in rural and urban areas. The increase in population density of these anopheline species through resistance to control products is further facilitated by the insecticide pressure acting on aquatic stages developing in agricultural settings, including coffee, sugar cane, cotton and rice fields [ 70 ], market gardening areas [ 76 ] and timber yards [ 59 ]. This insecticide pressure has progressively increased with the intensification of vector control through the distribution of ITNs to pregnant women and children aged < 5 years in the 2002–2011 decade and LLINs in the 2012–2021 decade.…”
