“…Chang (2011) conducted a study on the relationship between pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic strategies and came to the conclusion that pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic strategies are interrelated. A considerable number of studies have reported similar findings (e.g., Compernolle, 2011;Dascal, 1985;Felix-Brasdefer, 2008;Harlow, 1990;Holmes & Marra, 2011;Karatepe, 2001;Spencer-Oatey & Jiang, 2003;Vu, Bailey & Howes, 2010).…”

Since textbooks usually fail to supply satisfying information on pragmatics, which creates an impression on learners and teachers that learning pragmatics is an optional task (Ren & Han, 2016).…”

“…While the pragmatic use of gratitude has attracted the attention of many researchers around the world (Choe & Wang, 2015;Meiramova & Kulzhanova, 2015;Elwood, 2010;Farnia & Suleiman, 2009;Kashdan et al, 2009), there is a limited number of studies in the literature regarding Turkish EFL learners. In the Turkish context, Karatepe (2001) stated that the exposure to the authentic language for the learners of English is so limited that learners fail to express themselves using the language that is based on the cultural and social norms of the target language context. Hence, as a result of the lack in the pragmatic competences of the Turkish EFL learners, misunderstandings appear between interlocutors of the communicative situations and the messages neither reach the receiver as they are intended nor expected feedback returns.…”
