Practicing New Economic Geographies: A Methodological Examination

Abstract: Practicing new economic geographies necessarily entails a critical re-evaluation of research methodologies because of its different substantive research foci. In this article, I examine some methodological implications of the recent refiguring of the ''economic'' in economic geography. Some key features of new economic geographies include understanding the social embeddedness of economic action, mapping shifting identities of social actors, and exploring the role of material and discursive contexts in shaping … Show more

“…The results confirmed the findings from other studies (Halonen et al 2015; Haveri 2015; Kotilainen, Eisto, and Vatanen 2015; Makkonen and Hokkanen 2013; Puhakka 2008; Puhakka et al 2009; Törn et al 2008; Vihinen 2009). This enables researchers to recognize different voices of society by comparing different sources of findings that address similar phenomenon (Wai-chung Yeung 2003).…”

“…Our contention is yes but to genuinely use conjunctural cities to practise engaged pluralism requires moving from the implicit (and possibly accidental) to the explicit (reflecting conscious research strategy). In other words, we need to build what Yeung (2003: 455) termed ‘theoretical triangulation’ into the way we analyse cities. Theoretical triangulation is the awareness of the multiple insights offered by different perspectives – complementary, overlapping, competing and contradictory – on a(ny) given issue.…”

“…Este trabajo recurre a una metodología que combina técnicas cualitativas y cuantitativas, triangulando datos de diferente naturaleza, con el fin de obtener resultados más confiables (Yeung, 2003), lo que permite abordar el problema de estudio desde diversos ángulos. Allí es precisamente donde radica la valía de aplicar metodologías mixtas frente a otras enfocadas solamente en datos cualitativos o cuantitativos.…”
