Trans people's relationship with mental health providers carries historical tensions. Counseling services have been tied to standardized procedures or diagnostic certification of dysphoria and gender evaluations, while other psychosocial demands have been largely disregarded. Moreover, protocols and approaches focus disproportionately on Anglo‐American frameworks, in terms of epistemic resources established to describe gender‐diverse experiences. These issues affect both representations of gender identity and attitudes toward counseling. The present study aimed to address psychologists' accounts cross‐culturally, by using qualitative data acquired through interviews with active practitioners from Spain and Greece. Eighteen qualitative semi‐structured interviews were conducted in both countries in order to delve into the narratives related to trans mental health care provision. Thematic analysis using Atlas.ti was used to systematize the data. The accounts centered on gender identity representations and attributions, attitudes toward counseling, relationship with diagnoses, psychological approaches, and competent training. Findings point to the need for all‐encompassing, obligatory training of psychologists on trans mental health, followed by situated considerations of the contextual factors that may contribute to experiencing gender diversity differently. More cross‐cultural qualitative accounts are thus encouraged, to enrich and update the upcoming trans literature on the matter.

La era postfeminista post-recesionaria marca un giro a la interioridad, fuera de cuyo registro quedan cuerpos ininteligibles, excluidos, desarraigados y precarios. Esos cuerpos combaten sistemas de clasificación que no se abren a la multiplicidad de experiencias corporales. Después de las últimas modificaciones del manual diagnóstico CIE en 2018, se ha abierto supuestamente una puerta al cambio a nivel institucional para las identidades y corporalidades trans. No obstante, a nivel social, quienes tienen acceso a servicios, conocimiento y apoyo social son les que entran en los márgenes del passing. El texto examina la tensiónentre la conquista de la inteligibilidad y la libre exploración de lo no binario. Se realiza una lectura crítica y posicionada de propuestas teóricas que han cambiado últimamente la forma de percibir lo trans. La noción de «desposesión» es clave para esta lectura. El texto rodea dichos posicionamientos operando con tres lecturas: una representacional, una sistémicaprospectiva, y una intercultural.

“…STP2012 has promoted an important shift in trans rights mobilization, moving from a mere inclusion of trans people to a thorough frame change of the medical, legal, and social approach of transgenderism as a disorder, questioning the pathologization and its consequences in the life of trans people and with a clear focus on protecting and promoting trans autonomy and self‐determination during childhood (Araneta & Fernández Garrido, 2016; Missé, 2018; Suess Schwend et al, 2014). As Esther (Mayoko) Ortega Arjonilla puts it, “the influence of the International Campaign STP can be seen in (…) the brand new version of Standards of Care‐7, the public debate of DSM‐5, and in debates around the new version of ICD‐11” (Ortega Arjonilla, 2016, p. 36). On the other hand, self‐determination is a key value for trans policy‐making that was first introduced in the extremely influential transnationally 2012 Argentinian 26.743 law but has also radically changed activist thinking, demands and action in Spain.…”

Madrid is the first region in Spain whose government has managed to dismantle an already existing LGBTI legal framework, going against the recently voted Legal Gender Identity and LGBTI Law that applies at a State level (4/2023). The conservative government of Madrid has modified two regional laws to re‐establish gatekeeping and gender surveillance, thus putting the depathologization and self‐determination of gender identity at stake. LGBTI minors are particularly exposed to this measure, as the partial derogation of aspects of the Madrid law directly affects their autonomy and self‐determination. Our policy analysis examines the contradictions and severe effects of this law reform. We employ a cross‐reading of the State and regional statutory terms that are being jeopardized, to reveal the different levels of policy making in which the Spanish trans community is obliged to obey. We further call for further analysis and follow up of the consequences of these law reforms and the impact on LGBTI people of all ages.
