The drylands of China are extensive, and they are home to more than one-third of the country's population. However, the watershed territories of the drylands, where the majority of human activities are concentrated have long experienced strained human-land relationships, culminating in ecological security concerns. Correspondingly, it is essential to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the ecological security of dryland watersheds and to identify the key factors influencing ecological security in order to formulate strategies that ensure the sustainability of drylands. Premised on the Driving-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model, this study developed an ecological security index and applied it to the Irtysh River Basin of Xinjiang, China, from 2000 to 2020. The obstacle degree model was applied to reveal the obstacles in two dimensions: criterion level and indicator level. The findings suggested that the ecological security comprehensive index in the Irtysh River Basin has increased significantly from 2000 to 2020, irrespective of the fact that it decreased during the study period and then increased. The ecological security level changed from 'critically safe' in 2000 to 'general safety' in 2020, with the state subsystem and pressure subsystem becoming ecological security weaknesses. The primary factors influencing the ecological security of the study area were water consumption, the area of high-efficiency water-saving irrigation, the proportion of wetland area, vegetation coverage, and livestock population. The ecological security of different counties in the basin varies greatly, whereas the factors that influence ecological security showed both similarities and differences among the counties. In light of on the findings, we proposed that future strategies for ecological security enhancement should concentrate on enacting the policy of localizing spatial differentiation, optimizing industrial structure, strengthening scientific and technological support in the field of water conservation, bolstering the treatment capacity of environmental facilities, and implementing the Mountains-Rivers-Forests-Farmlands-Lakes-Grasslands System to support the sustainable development of dryland watersheds.

Watersheds are ecosystems which are crucial for water quality, biodiversity, and overall environmental sustainability. Increasing pressure from human activities such as deforestation, water pollution, and changes in land use has begun to threaten the sustainability of watersheds throughout the world. This research discusses the challenges and opportunities in building environmental awareness in a watershed region. A qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach is used to understand the experiences, attitudes, and actions of the watershed community in relation to environmental issues. The research results show the challenges faced include a lack of understanding about the watershed ecosystem, insufficient access to information technology, economic problems, and poor local leadership to support environmental preservation. An integrated environmental education program, together with community participation and development of technological innovation may offer an effective solution. Strong environmental awareness in watershed regions not only supports environmental preservation but also creates sustainable economic opportunities, strengthens environmental resilience, and improves the life quality of the community. Therefore, building environmental awareness in watershed regions is not only the job of local communities but also the shared responsibility of various stakeholders, which is needed to achieve sustainability of the river ecosystem and the broader environment.

Restauración del bosque montano en suelos degradados: La fertilización temprana quintuplica el crecimiento postplantación de Polylepis australis

R��.Los suelos montanos afectados por la pérdida de bosque, el fuego y la ganadería son más propensos a la erosión y, en consecuencia, a una degradación más rápida que afecta su fertilidad. La degradación del suelo dificulta la restauración del bosque nativo y ocasiona bajas tasas de reclutamiento natural y crecimiento lento en las plantaciones. Para contribuir a una restauración más efectiva del bosque, pusimos a prueba la hipótesis de que en suelos montanos degradados, la adición temprana de fertilizantes mejora la supervivencia y el crecimiento de los plantines en los primeros meses de la plantación. Nuestra especie modelo fue Polylepis australis, una arbórea muy usada en proyectos de restauración en las montañas más altas del centro argentino. En un área en restauración con parches de suelos degradados, aplicamos siete tratamientos: tres dosis de NPK triple 15 (25, 34 y 67 g), tres dosis de urea (10, 20 y 30) y un tratamiento sin fertilizante (control). La supervivencia a los 14 meses de plantados fue del 80% y no estuvo asociada al tratamiento de fertilización. Independientemente de la dosis, los plantines fertilizados con NPK crecieron en promedio 5 veces más que los no fertilizados y más del doble que los fertilizados con urea. El crecimiento de los plantines sin fertilizante y los fertilizados con urea no difirió significativamente. Los resultados sugieren que, para P. australis, hay una deficiencia de nitrógeno (N), fósforo (P) o potasio (K) en los suelos degradados, que -al parecer-se pudo enmendar con cualquiera de las dosis de NPK y no así con la adición de urea (únicamente N). Concluimos que en suelos montanos degradados, adicionar nutrientes en el momento de la plantación puede ser una estrategia efectiva para incrementar la cobertura arbórea en menos tiempo y así reducir la erosión de suelos más rápidamente.
