Practical Approaches to Assessment of Harmonics Along Radial Distribution Feeders

Abstract: A high level of delivered power quality is becoming one of the key performance indicators for both contemporary and future power networks. The increased proliferation of converter connected generation and load in power networks will lead to increased levels of harmonics in distribution networks. A general knowledge of the distribution network performance in terms of harmonics is essential for distribution network operators for both operating and planning networks while considering power quality performance. “…To overcome the first of the aforementioned difficulties, some of the past reports have proposed different harmonic state estimation (HSE) methods relying on using phasor measurement units [11], [16] or regular power quality (PQ) meters [12], [13], [17], and have analyzed their optimal location [18], [19]. None of these methods, however, overcome the second difficulty, i.e., the unavailability of network parameter data.…”

“…Recently, [17] presented a practical method for the assessment of harmonics in the presence of limited data. The method investigated harmonic penetration in a medium voltage (MV) network with radial topology.…”

“…As an alternative, the same paper (i.e. [17]) reported a probabilistic approach which is essentially the classical Monte Carlo simulation technique. The harmonic load flow was solved for each harmonic order – i.e.…”

“…However, errors on large lateral feeders are increased, which indicates that optimisation problems with inequality constraints need to be considered. In [19], a method for assessment of harmonic levels along medium voltage distribution systems is presented. This method quickly assesses the harmonic performance of the network with low errors.…”
