Practical approach to linear endoscopic ultrasound examination of the rectum and anal canal

Abstract: Standard endosonographic examination of the rectal area is usually performed with radial endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). However, in recent years, widespread availability of linear EUS for assessing various anatomical regions in the gastrointestinal tract has facilitated its use in the assessment of anorectal disorders. Currently, many rectal and anal diseases, including perianal abscesses, fistulae, polyps, and neoplastic lesions, can be well-visualized and evaluated with linear EUS. The aim of this review is to… Show more

“…Currently, most studies have concentrated on mini-probe EUS or radial EUS 14 , with fewer investigations employing linear EUS to explore lower gastrointestinal lesions. In a recent study, linear EUS was solely utilized in the rectum 11 . However, there are minimal relevant studies on the application of linear EUS for the entire lower gastrointestinal tract due to equipment requirement and operational challenges.…”

“…An additional advantage of linear EUS is the ability to sample the tissue by EUS-FNA/FNB 8 . Currently, most studies have concentrated on mini-probe EUS or radial EUS 4 , 11 13 , 16 , with fewer investigations employing linear EUS to explore lower gastrointestinal lesions. “…In addition, EUS can be directly performed at the exact site of any significant endoscopic findings. For the evaluation of the anal canal, a radial echoendoscope is preferred, and for the rectal and pararectal regions, the linear echoendoscope is recommended 38 . EUS of the entire colon can be performed with either a forward-viewing linear echoendoscope or during conventional colonoscopy with an EUS mini probe.…”
