PQ:PMMA Holographic Wavelength Division Multiplexing Filters For Use in Monocular Passive Ranging and Free Space Optical Communications

Abstract: We demonstrate the use of angle multiplexed holograms for wavelength division multiplexing in free space optical communications, with application to absorption based monocular passive ranging using three simultaneous and superimposed spectral filters.

“…Volume HOEs are a great candidate for such an application, as they can function as diffractive spectral filters with customizable center wavelength and FWHM. 8,11 PQ:PMMA is a write-once read-many photopolymer that can be created in thicknesses up to millimeter scale, allowing the stored holograms to function in the Bragg regime. Gratings are formed by interfering expanded laser beams within the material, whereby the peaks and troughs of the interference pattern result in correspondingly strong or weak reactions between the PQ dye molecules and MMA monomers, yielding a modulation of the refractive index.…”

“…In order to overcome this limitation, it is necessary to perform k-vector matching to find the writing angles for 532 nm beams that produce equivalent gratings that can match the design parameters. 8,11 Figure 2. Spectral-spatial filtering diagram.…”
