Ppe.CR.1 DNA test for predicting chilling requirement in peach

Abstract: Chilling requirement (CR) is an important agronomic trait controlling the floral bud break for proper flowering in peach. Even though it has been widely researched and several peach CR quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been identified, no diagnostic DNA tests validated in the U.S. peach breeding germplasm are available for this trait. Breeders and growers need a simple DNA test to predict the CR of peach cultivars for their particular environment. Therefore, we developed a quick and reliable Kompetitive Alle… Show more

“…Both markers were developed from the extra-early cultivar 'Cristobalina' for the detection of structural mutations (within the DAM genes region) associated to early FD and low CRs in sweet cherry (Calle et al, 2021). More recently, in peach, KASP markers were developed in the region spanning from 43.58 to 43.78 Mb on the chromosome 1 (Pp01) and validated to predict CRs (Demirel et al, 2023). These markers, located near the DAM genes, are located 1 Mb upstream from those that we developed within the LG1 QTL (orthologous positions of KASP_LG1_50.880 and KASP_LG1_52.362 on the peach chromosome 1 are 44.60 Mb and 45.78 Mb, respectively).…”

“…The trees used in the study were 7 -10 years old, grafted on Guardian® rootstock and trained as perpendicular V or opencenter vase. Chilling requirement (CR) in chill hours (CH), bloom dates in Julian date (JD), and heat requirement (HR) in growing degree hours (GDH) for this material were previously described in Demirel et al [27] and Atagul et al [28].…”
