PPARs in Irradiation-Induced Gastrointestinal Toxicity

Abstract: The use of radiation therapy to treat cancer inevitably involves exposure of normal tissues. Although the benefits of this treatment are well established, many patients experience distressing complications due to injury to normal tissue. These side effects are related to inflammatory processes, and they decrease therapeutic benefit by increasing the overall treatment time. Emerging evidence indicates that PPARs and their ligands are important in the modulation of immune and inflammatory reactions. This paper d… Show more

“…Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR γ ) is a nuclear receptor highly expressed in the intestines and plays a key role in inflammation. Further studies should explore the effects of abdominal irradiation on PPARs, their roles and functions in irradiation toxicity, and the possibility of using their ligands for radioprotection [ 57 ].…”

“…Acute effects start from the second week onward and peak by the fourth to fifth week. 9 There are only few articles where feasibility of either radiation alone or chemoradiation is well studied in rural population. In a study by Jain et al, 10 on outcome of patients treated with radical radiotherapy alone in cervical carcinoma in a rural center in India, they did not come across any significant acute toxicities.…”

“…PCa pharmaceuticals were defined as those that are currently approved on the PBS for the treatment of PCa and related indications. General pharmaceuticals were included if they were considered to be related to the diagnosis of PCa, treatment of PCa or PCa disease or treatment side effects . PCa medical services were defined using PCa relevant MBS item numbers in combination with the MBS descriptor “provider specialty.” PCa‐specific provider specialties included medical oncology, diagnostic radiology, immunology, urology and radiation oncology.…”
