Powering newly constructed vessels to comply with ECA regulations under fuel market prices uncertainty: Diesel or dual fuel engine?

Abstract: Over the last decade, marine engine engineering has evolved considerably, to the point where engine technology can be considered mature and reliable using LNG as fuel without affecting safety at sea. This paper analyses the choice between different engines jointly and considers the alternatives of installing or not installing a sulphur scrubber when building a new vessel. We consider the possibility of installing a dual or a diesel engine. The dual engine is more flexible because it can consume liquefied natur… Show more

“… Lirn et al (2013) discovered that the promotion of green ships directly improves corporate financial performance and environmental performance, under the joint effect of environmental policies, shipping markets, and ship suppliers, and identified the key to the improvement: encouraging shipowners to invest more in green machinery and equipment on their ships. Considering the decision to install or not install scrubber on new ships, Abadie and Goicoechea (2019) comprehensively analyzed diesel engine and LNG dual-fuel engines, and proved LNG dual-fuel engines as the better choice, which minimizes the total investment and fuel costs.…”

“…e design can promote the development of ship green technology by stimulating different environmentally friendly ships [17]. Abadie and Goicoechea [18] studied the impact of ship investment and fuel costs on the four scenes: installation of dual or diesel engines and a scrubber or not, believing that a dual engine without scrubber is an optimal choice in the short term. According to Abadie et al [19], extending the remaining life of the ship also lengthens the travel time to travel in the ECA area and the sea and improves the installation of the scrubber.…”
