Powerful Software to Simulate Soil Consolidation Problems with Prefabricated Vertical Drains

Abstract: The present work describes the program Simulation of Consolidation with Vertical Drains (SICOMED_2018), a tool for the solution of consolidation processes in heterogeneous soils, with totally or partially penetrating prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) and considering both the effects of the smear zone, generated when introducing the drain into the ground, and the limitation in the discharge capacity of the drain. In order to provide a completely free program, the code Next-Generation Simulation Program with I… Show more

“…It means that the influence of the dewatering process plays a significant role in the appearance of deformation in building components. García-Ros et al [11] explain the program emulates consolidation with Vertical Drains, which is a tool for solving in heterogeneous soils with totally or partially penetrating prefabricated vertical drains. The code Next-Generation Simulation Software with Integrated Circuit Focus was used as a computational method, while the Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB) code was used to program and construct an interface with the user via interactive screens in order to provide a fully free program.…”

“…, 2012; Duncan, 1993; Britto et al. , 1989), and the available software (García-Ros et al ., 2018c). For example, the parameters in the consolidation model can be reduced to the smallest number that best helps the researcher manage the solution by the non-dimensionalization techniques, resulting in an accurate solution to the problem (García-Ros et al.…”

“…Nevertheless, in most problems, the significant phenomenon of seepage happens close to the retaining structure, so using a constant reticulation means that either very small cells are being used in areas where the calculated information is not relevant or very big cells next to the most important region of the problem. This shortcoming is solved using a non-constant discretization, as the size of the cell can be adapted according to the needs (Huber and Helmig, 2000;Schroth et al, 1998;García-Ros et al, 2018a). This kind of variable reticulation presents another advantage: when calculating the pressure on the retaining structure due to the water flow; smaller cells are needed to simulate the contact surface between the structure and the soil; and as the information involved for these calculations is taken from these cells.…”
