Power system transition in China under the coordinated development of power sources, network, demand response, and energy storage

Abstract: China is transiting its power system towards a more flexible status with a higher capability of integrating renewable energy generation. Demand response (DR) and energy storage increasingly play important roles to improve power system flexibility. The coordinated development of power sources, network, DR, and energy storage will become a trend. This paper examines the significance of source‐network‐demand‐storage coordinated development. Furthermore, an outlook of the power system transition in China is provid… Show more

“…China's self-provided power plants are produced in a specific historical period and under corresponding policies. Generally, large energy-consuming enterprises such as electrolytic aluminum, calcium carbide, steel, and cement invest in the establishment of self-provided power plants to provide self-balanced power supply systems within the enterprise, while providing relatively stable and low-cost power supply for end users [1]. Another purpose of the iron and steel industry to spend a lot of money to build its own power plant is to avoid the irreversible damage to the important units of the enterprise caused by the sudden power outage when the power off-grid accident occurs.…”

“…The first batch of self owned power plants was built by the government for specific industrial enterprises during the expansion of production scale, and the second batch was built at the weak stage of power infrastructure construction in China. In order to alleviate the problem of power shortage for large industrial users, the government encouraged multi-channel financing to run power plants and develop local self owned power plants of small thermal power types [1,2]. High power consumption industries include: electrolytic aluminum, calcium carbide, steel, cement and other enterprises.…”

“…A full-timing system operation model with flexible resource constraints and multi-day coordinated operation is constructed. In [8], it analyzes the evolution trend of flexibility demand generated by a high proportion of new energy, forecasts the operation characteristics of various flexible resources in the source network, and proposes some policy suggestions.…”
