Power System Inertia Estimation Using HVDC Power Perturbations

Abstract: This paper describes a power system inertia estimation method that utilizes power perturbations caused by the flow switch on an HVDC interconnector. The analysis is performed using real power system measurements from Ireland's all-island power system. The method employs an energy based estimation technique which permits a non-step power change to be used for inertia calculation and encapsulates the challenges associated with the use of real data. While it is shown that synchronous generators account for most o… Show more

“…The inertia expression is derived based on the swing equation in the frequency domain, the inertia estimation is related to the Fourier transformation results of the entire oscillation [11]. In [12], an energy based inertial estimation technique was adopted for the power disturbance caused by the flow switch on an HVDC interconnector. However, the above methods do not take the inertia distribution between areas into account.…”

“…σ(m) is the standard deviation of the first m elements in H k , N is the number of elements corresponding to the minimum value of σ(m). Finally, to reduce the influence of the inaccurate measurement and the primary frequency regulation response, the average value of the first N elements in the vector H k is taken as the estimation result according to Equation (12). In addition, the equivalent inertia of the power system is obtained by Equation (13).…”

“…The methods presented in [1], [7]- [10] use the swing equation to estimate the inertia of areas [1], whole system [7]- [9], or individual sources [10] in the event of a power imbalance. Similarly, the papers [11] and [12] use energy-based methods to estimate inertia. The authors of [13]- [15] use oscillations after a fault to compute inertia.…”

“…In [15], the load inertia provided by different power consumer groups is estimated, analyzing a permanent short circuit event. In [16], the inertia contribution from power station auxiliary loads is also taken into consideration in the overall system inertia using measurements taken during HVDC power perturbations. However, the disturbance-based estimation methods allow inertia estimation after severe events which do not occur very often in a power system and thus the real-time inertia estimation is not feasible.…”
