The paper is intended to present a comparative analysis between the impact of incandescent lamps and that of compact fluorescent lamps in regard to the quality of the electric power. This study is based on the analysis of harmonics presence in voltage and current curves. In accordance with the European directive, the incandescent lamps have been replaced by compact fluorescent lamps. In Romania, the Electric Power National Agency -ANRE-introduced requirements for performance and quality of the electric power. The questions arise as to which equipment does influence the quality of the electric energy and how could be reduced this influence. One such equipment is the compact fluorescent lamp. The experimental study highlights that compact fluorescent lamps produce harmonics as a result of their operation. These harmonics lead to notable increased levels of the current total harmonic distortions value.

The principal numerical and experimental results obtained by the authors on the harmonic power losses in low-voltage networks in the lighting area have been summarized in this review. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) loads were considered. Four-core cables and four single-core cable arrangements were examined. The cables were modeled by using electromagnetic finite element analysis software. It was found that the cross section of the neutral conductor plays an important role in the derating of the cable ampacity due to the presence of a high level of triplen harmonics in the distorted current. In order to reduce the third-order harmonic currents in the neutral conductor, an experimental investigation of diversity factors for LED in combination with CFL and LED lamps was also performed. Attention was paid to the reduction of the thirdorder harmonic current, which is mainly responsible for the strong increase in power losses in the neutral conductor of low-voltage installations. The convenience of having LED lamps designed to operate as two-phase loads is suggested for certain applications.

Abstract-Conventional light sources are less efficient as compared to the light emitting diode and compact fluorescent lamps. Conventional incandescent filament lamps are resistive and therefore do not depend on power quality parameters. In the electric power system, nonlinear loads are increasing rapidly and the high content of harmonic due to the nonlinear loads cannot be neglected. Harmonic generation from the light emitting diode and the compact fluorescent lamp is one of the main problems for power quality. In this study, the light efficiency and electrical characteristics of the light emitting diode lamps and compact fluorescent lamps are evaluated under various voltage harmonic levels. The results show that light emitting diode, produces more harmonics as compared to the compact fluorescent lamps, with the increase of the voltage harmonic distortion from 0.7% to 3.52% in the light emitting diode, current harmonic increased from 140% to 192%. The results also show that increase in voltage harmonic distortion just not only increase current harmonics distortion but also affect the light wavelength of the lamp.
