Power Quality Measurement and Analysis in Electric Arc Furnace for Turkish Electricity Transmission System

Abstract: During the recent years, with its increasing steel production, Turkey has succeeded to become one of the ten biggest steel producer countries in the world. In Turkey, there are 3 integrated plants and 27 Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) plants in operation for iron-steel production. 71,3 % of the steel products was produced by EAF plants and also it is planned for new plants to produce with arc furnaces. In this study, power quality problems caused by 60MVA arc furnace at Sivas Iron and Steel Incorporated Company (S… Show more

“…Second, batch operation yields intermittent and discontinuous duty cycles, causing power quality problems for transmission and generation. 14 Both limitations prevent EAF from easy penetration deeper into the global steelmaking profile. In contrast, the higher penetration of intermittent renewables power generation might lead to increased market share and use.…”

“…It affects the operation of other connected loads in the distribution network [19]. This type of problem can lead to the payment of fines and demands for operational stoppages by the energy concessionaire, if they exceed the limits pre-established in technical standards [5,11,[20][21][22]. Beyond the problem of extrapolating standards requirements and providing disturbances in the network system, it may not be possible to operate the EAF and LF in an optimum manner if the bus voltage fluctuates rapidly and drastically due to furnace operation.…”

“…Thus, the main supply system parameter affecting the flicker that results from arc furnace installations is the short-circuit capacity at the PCC. Many articles also proved that the flicker caused by arc furnace installations is higher than established by the standards and it is necessary to develop a solution [5,11,[20][21][22].…”

“…In particular, measurements of power quality in a network with 60 MVA furnaces [2] showed the presence of lowfrequency current fluctuations and highfre quency and lowfrequency voltage flicker on power bus bars. Experimental analysis of ultra high power furnace [3] showed significant changes in reactive and active power consumption and asymmetry for different phases of these changes.…”
