Power Quality Issues and Mitigation for Electric Grids with Wind Power Penetration

Abstract: Large penetration of wind energy systems into electric-grids results in many power quality problems. This paper presents a classification of power quality issues, namely harmonics and short-duration voltage variation observed due to the integration of wind power. Additionally, different techniques and technologies to mitigate the effect of such issues are discussed. The paper highlights the current trends and future scopes in the improvement of the interconnection of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) into… Show more

“…System response is related to the distribution system's ability to provide power to users [42]. Existing techniques for calculating the reliability of power systems are all within the standard range [43]. Improve power supply reliability by measures including quickly finding and fixing problems, using short-circuit fault reporting devices, equipment to detect underground cable problems, establishing professional trouble-shooting teams, or constructing hotlines using the hotline system in repairing and maintaining high-, medium-and low-voltage lines.…”

“…However, due to the widespread of power electronics devices and nonlinear loads in the distribution system, harmonics levels in the distribution system may exceed the standard limits. Therefore, harmonic mitigation becomes more interesting in distribution systems to decrease distortion levels and enhance system performance [4].…”

“…Challenges to use the active filtration techniques by voltage or current injection have been made since the 1970's to reduce the use of passive filters [30]. In particular, series active filters are capable to suppress voltage harmonics generated by the load or source especially with aggressive deployment in inverter system into electrical vehicles with renewable energy systems [31][32][33]. However, they incorporate large coupling transformer design, and they are weaker in dealing with current harmonics caused by a non-linear load.…”
