Power Quality Improvement of Single Phase Grid Connected Photovoltaic System

Abstract: This paper presents a single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic power system with the capability of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of photovoltaic (PV) array and reactive power compensation. The non linear characteristics of the proposed modified p-q theory have been improved with the help of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. MPPT controller helps to feed the inverter with maximum power from the solar grid, for switching pattern generation hysteresis controller is used. The simulation results… Show more

“…The p-q theory, also referred as instantaneous reactive power theory, is popular in three-phase threewire power systems and has recently been developed to three-phase four-wire power systems. Despite the fact that this theory utilizes signals of three currents and voltages, the three separate signals can be obtained by lagging or delaying the available single phase signal by 120º and 240º [2], [7]. Load currents for phases B and C can be characterised as equation ( 2) and equation ( 3), respectively, by using equation (1) of the load current for phase A [7].…”

“…Due to the advantages of solar PV system such as simple architecture, easy installation, pollution-free operation and low maintenance, this system becomes more relevant as a source of renewable energy. By installing the PV modules in series and parallel connection, the output voltage and current of the PV array can be obtained according to the required applications [2].…”

“…A PV system converts solar energy into electrical energy by exciting electrons in silicon cells, making PV system an intermittent energy source. PV generation coincides with peak energy demand, and provides low maintenance and operation costs, as well as a long service life and positive environmental impact [14]. However, PV cell efficiency is low and power generation is dependent on location and weather conditions.…”

“…In contrast to the above methods, the hysteresis current control (HCC) is a simple method for multi-functional operation as it offers advantages such as rapid current controllability, easy implementation, and load insensitivity with respect to parameter variations, maximum current limit, and better stability [15,16,[23][24][25][26][27][28]. But, the major limitation of the HCC is its highly variable switching frequency to match variation in solar irradiation and associated compensation requirements that results in higher switching losses.…”
