In this research, a novel pulse-doubling circuit (PDC) is employed to upgrade the 28-pulse rectifier to the efficient 56-pulse rectifier. The main objective of this research is to reduce the power kVA rating. In the autotransformer with a 14-phase polygon structure, the kVA rating is approximately 39.5% of the load power. Since the pulse-doubling method is utilized, the rectifier with 56 pulses has benefited from a simpler structure. With a comparison to the other rectifiers, the harmonic mitigation is the clearest feature of the proposed rectifier. According to the experimental and theoretical results, in the proposed rectifier with 56 pulses, the input current THD is less than 3%. Finally, the volume and cost of the proposed rectifier with 56 pulses show a notable reduction. In other words, the proposed rectifier is an economical choice for most sectors of the industry.

In this paper, a novel pulse tripling circuit (PTC) is suggested, to upgrade a polygon autotransformer 12-pulse rectifier (12-PR) to a 36-pulse rectifier (36-PR) with a low power rating. The kVA rating of the proposed PTC is lower compared to the conventional one (about 1.57% of load power). Simulation and experimental test results show that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input current of the suggested 36-PR is less than 3%, which meets the IEEE 519 requirements. Also, it is shown that in comparison with other multi-pulse rectifiers (MPR), it is cost-effective, its power factor is near unity and its rating is about 24% of the load rating. Therefore, the proposed 36-PR can be considered as a practical solution for industrial applications.

A novel 40‐pulse autotransformer rectifier is proposed to reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input current in aircraft electrical power systems. The 40‐pulse rectifier (40PR) includes a passive harmonic reduction circuit (PHMC) with a low kVA rating (about 0.95% of the load power) to enhance the performance of the conventional 40PR. This PHMC is based on 2 harmonic suppression circuits and contains four tapped reactor and 4 auxiliary diodes. 50 Hz simulations of the improved 40PR indicate that THD of the input current and voltage is less than 2%, which meets the IEEE‐519 standard. In addition, without using any input and output filters, input current harmonic components at 400–800 Hz are less than the requirements mentioned in the DO‐160G and MIL‐STD‐704F standards. The suggested PHMC can easily be implemented. A prototype is developed to verify the proposed design. A good agreement can be seen in simulation and experimental results.
