Power quality effect of using incandescent, fluorescent, CFL and LED lamps on utility grid

Abstract: One of the major electrical load on a utility grid is industrial, street and residential lightings. To enhance the energy efficiency and as a measure of energy conservation, incandescent lamps (IL) are replaced with the modern lights. Replacing incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) and fluorescent lamp (FL) is one of the measures taken by the authorities to reduce the energy consumption and enhance energy efficiency. Both the CFLs and LEDs are the sources of harmonics as electronic circuits ar… Show more

“…LED is the core component of the TALiSMaN scheme as it is more energy efficient compare to compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and Incandescent Light Bulbs [21]. It also provides better brightness and have a longer lifespan [22]. Under this scheme, each of the streetlight is powered by electrical grid to ensure sufficient and stable power supply [23], [24].…”

“…Aquí se sabe que el factor de potencia es la relación adimensional de desfase o desplazamiento "cos θ" entre la tensión y la corriente a la frecuencia fundamental o, lo que es lo mismo, de la potencia activa (kW) con respecto a la potencia aparente (kVA) del sistema o la carga [29]. En la figura 5a se registra la representación del triángulo de potencia sin distorsión armónica.…”

“…The use of light emitting diodes (LED) bulbs technology, which is considered an improvement in lamp efficiency, leads to limited energy savings, but when maximizing daylight, it is one of the measures to achieve a low energy design [12]. Also, a study was conducted to study the effect of changing the power factor in the LED bulbs on the total harmonic distortion (THD), the study was conducted on a house and a hotel, and the result was that it contributes to increasing harmonics [13]. As well as in another study on the effect of changing the feeding voltage of the LED bulbs (160-240) volts on the quality of the bulb and the color characteristics of the bulb, it was found that the bulb of good and approved industry is not affected by this change [14].…”
