Power Performance Analysis Based on Savonius Wind Turbine Blade Design and Layout Optimization through Rotor Wake Flow Analysis

Abstract: Savonius vertical axis wind turbines have simple structures, can self-start in environments with low wind speed and strong turbulence intensity, and can be installed at low costs. Therefore, installation is possible in urban centers with low wind speeds, which may contribute to the construction of a decentralized power system. Savonius wind turbines are operated by drag force, with the blades moving in the same direction as the flow current providing the thrust force and those moving in the opposite direction … Show more

“…Seeking an appropriate wind farm layout constitutes a challenging vital task in wind-energy-related projects. For this, many works explore this trend in the research direction [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. The optimized layout in [21] improved the power production by approximately 97%, where the genetic algorithm was utilized with a continuous approach to explore unlimited wind farm layouts.…”

“…Horizontal axis wind turbines are effective but less practical in urban areas and during low wind speeds. In contrast, vertical axis wind turbines, like Savonius and Darrius rotors, can provide decentralized power systems, with Savonius rotors excelling in starting power, even in low wind conditions [5]. Multiple studies have been done to further improve Savonius' efficiency and self-starting ability by optimizing its rotor geometry and implementing deflectors.…”

“…Experimental findings indicate that adjusting the geometry of blades in a Savonius rotor wind turbine can lead to an enhanced power coefficient. These results highlight the possibility of optimizing the turbine's performance by strategically modifying blade geometry [18,19]. An alternative optimization approach is the design of experiments (DOE), which primarily aims to select specific design parameters that effectively represent the design space.…”
