“…However, due to the restriction of the land quality equalization policy applied when land is contracted for production and assigned to households, cultivated land in the vast, hilly areas of China tends to be "small, scattered, and weak" [8]. With the development of the social economy, the small, scattered, and weak land-use problem has become increasingly prominent and has gradually become a major restriction to China's rural economic development and food security [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. With the continuous industrialization and urbanization of China, the household contract responsibility system, which features decentralized management, is increasingly unable to meet the needs of modern agricultural development, which is characterized by "marketization, scale, and informatization" [17].…”

However, the overall trend of farmland abandonment is in line with the broader economic trends in China [9,17,18]. Based on the above statistics and statement, it is clear that farmland abandonment is related to industrialization and urbanization.…”

“…It is clear that the reasons affecting abandonment listed by Shi et al also include the factor of farmers’ income. Besides, social capital and agricultural credit will also affect farmland abandonment through the opportunity cost of farming labor [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Above all, the income of rural households, including agricultural income and non-agricultural income, is the main direct factor affecting farmland abandonment.…”

“…More specifically, it has brought various environmental problems, such as ecological deterioration, resource scarcity, land degradation, overall climate change, and a comprehensive decline in urban land use. Even in some rural areas, there has been a phenomenon of abandoned farmland [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. As a result, these problems have heavily affected the sustainable development of the regional economy and society as well as human well-being.…”
