Speech is one of the communication media that can be used to convey certain ideas and intentions of the speaker. The current study aims to analyze the use of transitivity and modality in Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’s speeches on handling COVID-19 and interpret their meanings. Data comprises the transcripts of two speeches delivered at the media briefing on COVID-19 on 11 March 2020 and 1 April 2021 available on the World Health Organization website (www.who.int). The transcripts were then examined and evaluated using Halliday’s (1994) transitivity theory and Halliday's (1994) and Lock’s (1996) modality theories. The results reveal that the speeches made use of material, relational, mental, behavioral, verbal, and existential processes of transitivity, as well as potentiality/ability, obligation, usuality, inclination, and probability of modality. Depending on the contexts of speech, the use of transitivity and modality indicates certain interpretations of meaning. Moreover, this study contributes best practices to health socialization during the pandemic and gives a great impact on the public’s better understanding of how to properly handle COVID-19.

Covid-19 has been global health problem and become the concern of global leaders in the world. One of them is Joe Biden, current president of American. He delivered his speech on Anniversary Covid-19 Shutdown on March 11, 2021. The clauses in his speech contain modality. Modality is included in interpersonal meaning where language is used to encode interaction between the speaker and the hearer. This research aims to analyze the type of modality used by Biden in his speech and utilize it to find his self-representation. The research uses Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) in term of modality analysis as the tool and discourse analysis as the approach. The finding shows that three types of modalities found; inclination, probability and obligation. The self-representation of Biden found are being visionary, being determined, showing sadness, being powerful, and showing respect. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v6i2.6531

Kemunculan modalitas sebagai fitur lingual yang menunjukkan praktik kuasa pelaku kejahatan dalam komunitas pedofilia terhadap proposisi yang mereka tuturkan atau sikap terhadap pendengar. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengungkapkan praktik kuasa pelaku kejahatan dalam komunitas pedofilia melalui modalitas. Sesuai dengan tujuan tersebut, penelitian ini adalah analisis wacana kritis. Data penelitian ini berupa kata yang diperoleh selama observasi netnografi online partisipan di komunitas pedofilia. Data yang diperoleh selama observasi netnografi online didokumentasikan dalam bentuk pengarsipan digital dan dicatat dalam bentuk field note untuk dianalisis. Analisis modalitas dalam penelitian ini menggunakan model dimensi analisis wacana kritis (AWK) Fairclough berupa deksripsi, interpretasi, dan eksplanasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam komunitas pedofilia terdapat praktik kuasa yang dilakukan oleh pelaku kejahatan dengan menggunakan kata kerja modal linguistik. Temuan dari penelitian ini adanya modalitas sebagai fitur lingual praktik kuasa yang meliputi (1) nilai relasional modalitas yang ditandai dengan menggunakan modal mungkin, akan, dan bisa, dan (2) nilai ekspresif modalitas diungkapkan dengan menggunakan modal harus. Simpulan penelitian ini dari analisis kritis terhadap nilai relasional modalitas dan nilai ekspresif modalitas terdapat praktik kuasa sebagai konstruksi realitas sosial dari komunitas pedofilia.
