Power, Freedom, and Individuality: Foucault and Sexual Difference

Abstract: This paper offers a detailed account of Foucault's ethical and political notion of individuality as presented in his late work, and discusses its relationship to the feminist project of the theory of sexual difference. I argue that Foucault's elaboration of the classical ethos of "care for the self" opens the way for regarding the "I-woman" as an ethical, political and aesthetic self-creation. However, it has significant limitations that cannot be ignored. I elaborate on two aspects of Foucault's avoidance of … Show more

“…In arguing the fruitfulness of viewing Irigaray's textual strategies as implying technologies of self, I do not argue for some general similarity between Foucault's ethics and Irigaray's. Although I have elaborated elsewhere why I believe Foucault's work may be productive for the project of rethinking subjectivity in a feminist context (Rozmarin ), what I offer here does not have to, nor does it de facto , rest on a general position regarding the controversy of Foucault's possible contribution to feminist theory. By employing Foucault's notion of technologies of self I assume this notion to be helpful in understanding how Irigaray's distinct style unfolds into concrete practices.…”

“…Second, ancient Greek philosophy understood sexual ethics as being comprised of four unique domains, relating to its substance, use, mastery, and moderation, rather than lists of proscribed behaviors as defined by lawmakers or psychologists. While Foucault held the belief that culture in general is discontinuous, Richlin ( 1998 ) has put up a convincing rebuttal, as has Rozmarin ( 2005 ) in conceptualizing individuals as embodiments of the historical influences that have been placed upon them by outside institutions. Undoubtedly, the world has changed over the past 2,400 years.…”

“…Although Foucault does not offer a complete theory of power he understands it as a modality of action (Rozmarin 2005). His aim is to open up a way of thinking about power that cannot be easily reduced to the idea of domination and this is achieved by focusing on the way in which actions act on actions (Hoy 1986: 135).…”
