Power Factor and Harmonic Analysis in Single Phase AC to DC Converter

Abstract: This paper analyses the low power factor and harmonic issues in AC to DC converters i.e. conventional diode bridge rectifier and PWM rectifier. The peaky current drawn by the capacitor in diode bridge rectifier is the reason for high total harmonic distortion (THD) and low power factor. This problem can be overcomed by replacing the diode in bridge rectifier with IGBT and pulses given to these switches can be controlled to obtain a unity power factor and low THD. Such rectifier circuit is known as Pulse Width … Show more

“…The existence of the capacitor contiguous parallel with the resistance led to an increase the DC component of the output voltage and meaningfully decreases the output ripple voltage which is agreed with [R. Sbaffer] [5]. While a filter capacitor significantly crushes the ripple for the output voltage, it involving distortions in the input current and draws current due to the supply discontinuously, in short pulses is resembled according to [H. Anga et al] [3].The variation of THD and its Output power due to the variation of load resistance, it has explained of the high THD to be agree with low . The circuit have a unity PF , while other research shows that the power factor is less than unity.…”

“…The present authors proposed an active load balancer in TPFWDFs to achieve the balanced source currents with a unity PF, where unbalancedlinear loads were connected (1) . Modern consumer electronics are with single-phase diode rectifiers, which generate a large amount of harmonic currents in distribution feeders (2) . This article deals with harmonic currents compensation with a constant DC-capacitor voltage control (CDCVC) of a four-leg structured active power-line conditioner (APLC) in TPFWDFs.…”
