Power Electronics Open-Source Educational Platform

Abstract: Learning Power Electronics is essential in both electrical and electronic engineering fields and the introductory courses are similar in many universities. Taking this premise into account, an educational computer-aided platform for power electronics will be presented in this paper. This educational platform includes an e-book, a set of power electronics animations, Java simulations, as well as several hands-on training sessions. The main advantages of this platform are twofold. First, all necessary teaching t… Show more

“…This is readily observed by a rapidly expanding global library of low-cost and high-quality libre electronic designs for science equipment [8]. For example, outside of the expected open electronics for teaching electrical engineers [9,10], there are devices used to aid in electrical engineering research, such as power monitoring [11] and phasor measurement [12]. Open-source electronics systems have been developed to accurately measure gas pressures [13] and properties [14].…”

“…Power electronics is a branch of the science of processing and controlling electricity electronically [1]. Required renewal of teaching materials in power electronics learning [2], [3]. Power electronics competencies include (1) understanding power semiconductor components, (2) understanding the working principle of 1-phase and 3-phase uncontrolled rectifiers, (3) understanding the working principles of 1-phase and 3-phase controlled rectifiers, (4) explaining DC-DC converters, (5) explain the working principle of the inverter system, and (6) understand the AC-AC converter.…”

“…The multidisciplinary nature of power electronics (Fig. 3) imposes crucial challenges in their teaching [10], [11], [12], [13]. Considering the diversity in the students' educational backgrounds, the required multi-domain knowledge might impact their understanding.…”

“…Students attending advanced power electronics courses might a) have graduated from different bachelor programs and at different universities, b) possess different levels of critical thinking, and c) follow different specializations within the same 5-year study program. This can result in different student perceptions regarding concepts from other relevant disciplines and their applicability in power electronics [10], [11], [12], [13]. Thus, the overall student understanding can be limited by these barriers making it difficult to achieve the learning outcomes.…”
