Power efficient visible light communication systems under dimming constraint

Abstract: Visible light communication (VLC) is a short range optical wireless communication using the light emitting diode (LED) lights, which can provide both illumination and communication. In this paper, we characterize the indoor multipath dispersion for VLC and propose multiple pulse position modulation (MPPM) as a power efficient modulation. Due to the reflections in indoor environment, equalization process is essential to mitigate inter-symbol interference (ISI). Frequency domain equalizer (FDE) is implemented to… Show more

“…Due to the local character of light, the LoS component of the signal will be presented in most cases and the multi-path propagation, which becomes a problem in RF systems, will be negligible for visible light communication (VLC). 20,21 Compared with the above-mentioned positioning technologies, VLP has the advantages of higher localization accuracy, lower deployment cost, stronger anti-interference ability, and not need deploying additional positioning infrastructure, no electromagnetic interference, and access authentication. Besides, VLP system has been designed for RF- or electromagnetic-sensitive areas like hospitals and airports, and areas without RF signal coverage, such as tunnels and underground mines.…”

“…A 2×2 non-imaging MIMO 4-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (4-QAM) VLC system based on nyquist single carrier [11], [12] is demonstrated. This N-SC-FDE scheme has the similarity of spectral efficiency performance to the multicarrier modulation scheme, i.e., OFDM, and with a reduced calculation complexity compared with traditional SC scheme based on time domain equalization.…”

“…Inverse source coding (ISC) was reported to outperform the time-multiplexed OOK and achieve the theoretical data rate bound asymptotically in a noise-free environment [31,32]. Multiple PPM was proposed to have as much rate support as ISC [30,33,34]. Color-shift keying (CSK) [26,35,36] positions the signal constellation according to color and controls dimming by the signal amplitude (optical power) for multicolored VLC.…”
