Power Boosting and Compensation During OTA Testing of a Real 4G LTE Base Station in Reverberation Chamber

Abstract: A fully operational 4G long-term evolution (LTE) base station is tested in a reverberation chamber to analyze its performance in the presence of a multipath environment, typical of wireless and vehicular communications. Transmission quality parameters are measured ranging from the empty chamber situation (very rich multipath channel) to a very high loading condition to mitigate multipath. In that way, both outdoor and indoor propagation are accounted for. A large attenuation is inserted between the transmitter… Show more

“…Since multipath fading has primarily effect onto symbol decoding [21], there must be a recognizable relation between fading and RAN performance indicators which directly depend on symbol decoding. In a cellular system, the block error rate (BLER) is the lowest level indicator which comes from symbol decoding [22]. The BLER is the error rate in decoding MAC radio blocks, and it says how difficult the symbol decoding is: the more corrupt (delayed, distorted in phase, amplitude and frequency) the symbol constellation is, the more difficult the decision [23] [24].…”

“…The use of the reverberation chamber set-up is well-known and mostly adopted in electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic interference analysis of electronic or wireless systems [ 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ]. Due to the particular electromagnetic environment, RC systems are frequently adopted to evaluate the EM absorbing capability provided by materials and structures [ 54 , 55 ].…”

“…The measurement uncertainties for total radiated power (TRP) and total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) were analyzed in [9]- [11]. The long-term evolution (LTE) base station has been measured in the RC , and the test results were reported in [12]- [14]. However, all the above studies focused on frequency bands below 6 GHz.…”
