Power-Based Control of Low-Voltage Microgrids

Abstract: This paper presents a simple and robust control technique for distributed energy resources (DERs) in micro-grids. The technique utilizes the full potential of DERs during grid-connected and islanded operating modes. In grid-connected mode, the control pursues quasi-optimum operation of the microgrid so as to reduce the distribution losses and voltage deviations while fully exploiting renewable energy sources. In islanded mode, it effectively manages … Show more

“…The proposed controller can re-duce the unstable generation negative influences to below the level of the system load. In [48], a modest method to synergistic control of distributed energy sources in low voltage microgrids is presented. This method can use the full capacity of distributed energy sources during islanded and grid-connected operating modes.…”

“…The UI is always controlled as a voltage source and, in general, it performs as a grid-supporting voltage source during grid-connected operation and as a grid-forming voltage source during islanded operation [15]. A communication infrastructure is assumed to provide the narrowband communication link between MC and distributed EGs that is needed to implement the coordinated control by the power-based algorithm [16]. It is worth remarking that the use of communication is limited to microgrid's optimization functions; if communication failures occur, the basic functions of DERs, as well as all the functions that can be performed autonomously, keep on operating normally.…”

“…The implementation of the power-based control is detailed in [14]. Here, we briefly describe how the control works in the two main operating modes of any microgrid, i.e., islanded and grid-connected.…”
