“…Our analyses are based on family income, but cohabiting partners are treated as unrelated individuals within a household; thus, cohabiting couples span two families according to CPS definitions. Race, correlated with both income (Proctor and Dalaker 2003) and non-marital fertility (Ventura 2000), is dummy-coded as White, Black, and other.
