Poultry Litter Selection, Management and Utilization in the Tropics

Abstract: In many places, poultry farms are sited and intensively managed in the residential areas with little welfare improvement and major concern of poultry waste disposal. The mean poultry litter generated per bird/day was estimated at 0.11 kg so that millions of metric tons of poultry manure are annually generated. Wastes generated from poultry farms constitute hazard to public health as well as potential source of conflict between neighbours. Beside environmental consequences, poultry waste impacts serious welfare… Show more

“…The quality of the in-house environment is highly dependent upon litter quality (Rizt et al, 2017). An effective bedding material must be readily available, absorbent, lightweight, inexpensive and non-toxic (Rizt et al, 2009;Waziri, Kaltungo, 2017 andMunir et al, 2019). The litter environment is ideal for bacterial proliferation and ammonia production.…”

“…Curiously in our research, poultry litter did not have the high number of resistance when compared with day-old chicken sample. The use of the same poultry litter in subsequent production cycles, when subjected to a sanitary vacuum and a good fermentation process, may result in a low microbial load ( Wei et al, 2013 ; Vieira et al, 2015 ; Waziri and Kaltungo, 2017 ; Gurmessa et al, 2021 ; Moffo et al, 2021 ; Yévenes et al, 2021 ). In Brazil, poultry litter is reused for more than one consecutive batch, and this practice is allowed if sanitary problems have not occurred with the batches housed on the poultry litter to be reused ( Waziri and Kaltungo, 2017 ).…”

“…Poultry litter is desired as an organic fertilizer for its high nitrogen content ( 14 ). The predominant forms of organic nitrogen in litter, urea, and uric acid are rapidly broken down to ammonia by urease and uricase enzymes produced by microorganisms naturally present in the litter ( 15 ).…”
