Poultry-borne salmonellosis in Scotland

Abstract: SUMMARY Between 1980-5, 224 outbreaks of salmonellosis associated with poultry-meat were reported in Scotland. In total 2245 persons were affected, 12 of whom died. Twenty-one salmonella serotypes were identified from those affected, while 33 serotypes were isolated from poultry during routine monitoring and disease investigation. Existing measures to prevent the spread of salmonellae within poultry flocks and processing plants are failing. It is suggested that irradiation of poultry-meat may be the only effe… Show more

“…Salmonella enterica serovar Livingstone is one of the more than 2,500 serovars of S. enterica known [3]. It was first isolated from human feces in 1951 [4]; since then, it has been rarely isolated from human beings and animals, particularly poultry and feed products [5][6].…”

“…S. serovar Infantis strains have been the most frequent isolates from broiler meat among foodstuffs in Western Japan (Murakami et al, manuscript submitted for publication). Broiler meat is one of major vehicles of zoonotic Salmonella to humans (3,11). Exact strain identification with molecular characteristics is particularly important to relate S. serovar Infantis-associated outbreaks of salmonellosis in humans to vehicles.…”

“…From the UK, phage type 110 is mainly known as a poultry associated type of S. typhimurium (Humphrey et al, 1988;Reilly et al, 1988). In Denmark, in 1987, phage type 110 was, however, demonstrated in 33% of cattle isolates, 7% of poultry isolates and 26% of human isolates (Baggesen, 1992).…”

“…Animals can be symptomless carriers of Salmonella and contamination of the carcasses during slaughter is a frequent problem, resulting in poultry and poultry products considered as the main source of human salmonellosis (Humphrey et al, 1988;Reilly et al, 1988). Handling chickens involves a risk of cross-contamination to other foods (Reilly et al, 1988;Oosterom, 1991).…”
