Potted rose cultivars with paclobutrazol drench applications

Abstract: Growth retardants, such as paclobutrazol, reduce plant height, and thus enable commercialization of larger ornamental plants in pots. The aim of this research was to evaluate the size, yield and flower quality of two rose cultivars as a function of various paclobutrazol applications to growing substrate. Treatments consisted of two cultivars (Yellow Terrazza® and Shiny Terrazza®) planted in plastic pots and five paclobutrazol doses (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0mg pot-1). The experiment was carried out in a greenh… Show more

“…Genotype has a significant effect on the plant's response to PBZ as reported in Curcuma (Sarmiento and Kuehny, 2003) and Zantedeschia (Corr and Widmer, 1991). Plant height, leaf area and dry matter in two rose cultivars, 'Yellow Terrazza' and 'Shiny Terrazza' tend to decline with increase in a PBZ concentration (Carvalho-Zanão et al, 2018). In pepper (Capsicum chinense cvs.…”

“…The reduction in the stem mass ratio occurred due to the inhibition of the biosynthesis of gibberellic acid by PBZ, causing a reduction in cell division and resulting in compact plants (Parladore et al, 2019). The inflorescence mass ratio is associated with the restriction of cell expansion and the accumulation of phenolic compounds in the stem regulator to increase cytokinin levels and, thus, increase chloroplast differentiation, chlorophyll biosynthesis and prevent its degradation (Carvalho-Zanão et al, 2018;Huang et al, 2019). The application of PBZ also increased chlorophyll levels in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) (Baninasab and Ghobadi, 2011) and stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) (Hajihashemi and Ehsanpour, 2013).…”

“…The greater the gas exchange, the greater the carbon assimilation and, consequently, more photosynthesis (Ferraz et al, 2012). The negative correlation between plant height and total chlorophyll may have been caused by the effect of PBZ on cell size reduction, having a low concentration of chlorophyll and a reduction in the intracellular space, causing the chloroplasts to become more dense (Carvalho-Zanão et al, 2018).…”

“…Monooxygenases catalyze the steps that ent-kaurene is oxidized and ent-kaurenoic acid was synthesized. Paclobutrazol works through inhibiting monooxygenases [17] [18]. The levels of active gibberellins in plants decreased remarkably after being sprayed with paclobutrazol [19] [20].…”
