Show more

“…In step with these developments in urban geography is an increasing use of the concept of assemblage both as descriptive tool and as a foundation for theory creation in a Deleuzian and Guattarian sense (Latour, 1993;McFarlane, 2011;Sassen, 2006;Shamir, 2013). This development is widely debated in both Anglophone and continental urban geography, and reflects the tensions between current research trends on the micro-and meso-scales and the political economy approaches at the macro-scale (Brenner, Madden, & Wachsmuth, 2011;Färber, 2014;McFarlane, 2011;Robinson, 2011;Simone, 2011). As important and relevant as that discussion is, this paper will eschew the term and its ambiguities in favour of the concept presented below.…”

“…They also addressed the opportunity to create an alternate criticism of urban practices — beyond the structural fixations of grand social and urban theories (see Brenner et al ., ; McFarlane, ; Russell et al ., ). In particular, they emphasized the potential for urban transformation created by the flow and mutability of assemblages (Law, ; Farías, ; for similar arguments put forth in the context of European urbanistic debates, see Färber, ). However, this perspective has been criticized as overlooking important trends of social change, including those following economic restructuring or enduring strong power relations (Brenner et al ., ; Wachsmuth et al ., ; Belina, ).…”

“…During April 2012, we empirically explored patterns of encounter between a changeable socio‐culture and an equally shifting materiality that contributed to the specificity of local assemblages in the inner city of Bucharest. Our methodological approach was based on inspirations we received from previous research into the formation of assemblages, in particular from the application of ethnographic methods (Brenner et al ., ; Rankin, ; Färber, : 99). We aimed to identify not only relevant socio‐material textures, but also their shifting contextualization, which provided specific directions in neighbourhood development.…”
