Potentiation of antifungal activity of terbinafine by dihydrojasmone and terpinolene against dermatophytes

Abstract: Significance and Impact of the Study: This is the first study that describes the dihydrojasmone and terpinolene action enhancing the antifungal activity of terbinafine against dermatophytes. In vitro tests have demonstrated that the monoterpenes act on the plasma membrane, positively modulating the sensitivity of fungal strains to terbinafine by a synergism association. We suggest that monoterpenes can be an effective and sustainable alternative while contributing to the reduction of the dermatophytes resistan… Show more

“…The high correlation of α-Phellandrene, Eucalyptol, Terpinolene and α-Terpineol with the inhibition effect was also demonstrated in previous findings. [49][50][51][52][53] Using the rule of variation between constituent difference and biological activity, the EO compounds could be applied in the targeted inhibition of different kinds of strains. addition, according to the antioxidant effect and gray correlation analysis, the content of rosemary EO in the compounded EOs was positively correlated with the antioxidant effect, and its good antioxidant effect was attributed to the high content of β-Pinene.…”

“…Camphor can downregulate genes related to biofilm formation, thus reducing the virulence of C. albicans [73]. Terpinolene works by disrupting C. albicans membrane integrity [74]. Another bioactive compound from C. xantorrhiza is xanthorhizzol, a bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid that can disrupt C. albicans cell membrane [75].…”

“…They are mainly responsible for the odor and taste present in cannabis flowers and are used in perfume fragrances and cleaning products worldwide. Besides these organoleptic characteristics, terpenes/terpenoids have been studied for their therapeutic potential, with works analyzing analgesic [19][20][21], anti-inflammatory [22][23][24][25][26], gastroprotective [27][28][29], anxiolytic/antidepressant [30][31][32][33][34][35], apoptotic/antimetastatic [36,37] antinociceptive [38][39][40], neuroprotective [41][42][43][44], sedative/motor relaxant [45][46][47], and antifungal [48,49] properties.
