Potentially Inappropriate Prescribing for Elderly Patients in 2 Outpatient Settings

Abstract: Research has shown a high prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication prescribing (PIP) for elderly patients in outpatient settings, but little is known about whether a physician's practice setting influences prescribing attitudes. This study examines the prevalence of PIP among elderly patients in 2 out-patient practices, 1 located in a senior citizens center and 1 in a general family medicine clinic. The authors conducted a retrospective chart review of a random sample of 50 individuals aged 65 years … Show more

“…In this study, Beers criteria (CD and ID) found that 13% of patients were prescribed potentially inappropriate medicines, compared to a rate of 10·4% with IPET. In previous studies involving patients in primary care, inappropriate prescribing rates using Beers criteria ranged from 9·8% to 24% (28–30). Despite differences in prescribing patterns and availability of medicines in various countries, the inappropriate prescribing rate of 13% is comparable with results obtained in similar studies in other countries.…”
