Floating aquatic macrophytes have a high level of proficiency in the removal of various contaminants, particularly nutrients, from wastewater. Due to their rapid growth rates, it is imperative to ensure the safe removal of the final biomass from the system. The ultimate macrophyte biomass is composed of lignocellulose and has enhanced nutritional and energy properties. Consequently, it can serve as a viable source material for applications such as the production of bioenergy, fertilizer and animal feed. However, its use remains limited, and in-depth studies are scarce. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of floating aquatic macrophytes and their efficacy in the elimination of heavy metals, nutrients and organic pollutants from various types of wastewater. This study offers a wide-ranging scrutiny of the potential use of plant biomasses as feedstock for bioenergy generation, focusing on both biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes. In addition, we provide information regarding the conversion of biomass into animal feed, focusing on ruminants, fish and poultry, the manufacture of fertilizers and the use of treated water. Overall, we offer a clear idea of the technoeconomic benefits of using macrophytes for the treatment of wastewater and the challenges that need to be rectified to make this cradle-to-cradle concept more efficient.

This study aims to propose measures for water conservation in urban areas in Brazil. Several measures are proposed, such as reduction of garden watering, water conservation in buildings, water reuse in urban areas and in buildings (greywater), use of rainwater, use of water from air-conditioners, control of losses in water supply systems, among others. Recommendations are made for actions to be developed in order to engage the community in water conservation programs. Measures for water conservation in urban areas are indicated. A national structure is proposed for a water conservation program in urban areas in Brazil. Also, it is proposed how the participation of national, federal and municipal agencies should be, indicating their respective attributions.

This paper discusses the use of gray water in Brazil. A revision of the Brazilian legislation on water reuse was made, with emphasis on the qualitative aspects of gray water. Examples of use of gray water in Brazil are presented. As a case study, it was characterized the composition of the raw and treated gray waters from a home building composed of two towers with 22 floors, each, with an average population estimated at 224 people. The gray waters come from the showers and washbasins of the apartments and, after being treated, are used in the discharge of sanitary appliances and in the irrigation of about 4400 m 2 of gardens. The treatment of gray water is composed of the following units: coagulation, flocculation, laminar decanter, double layer filter (anthracite and sand) and chlorine disinfection. It was concluded that the treated gray waters can be used for less restrictive purposes. The results obtained in the research indicate the importance of water reuse, notified in non-potable uses, constituting an alternative for water resource management, both under economic and environmental aspects.
