Potential Use of Tailored Citicoline Chitosan-Coated Liposomes for Effective Wound Healing in Diabetic Rat Model

Abstract: This study aimed to formulate citicoline-loaded chitosan-coated liposomes (CT-CS-LPs) for topical administration and evaluated for wound healing in a diabetic animal model. Methods: CT-LPs were formulated via a thin-film hydration approach and coated with chitosan (CS). Box-Behnken statistical design investigated the effects of lipid amount, chitosan concentration, and cholesterol amount on vesicle diameter, surface charge, and entrapment efficiency. The potential of the optimized CT-CS-LPs gel for wound heali… Show more

“…The GS levels in the supernatant portion were estimated spectrometrically at 302 nm. The EE percentage was calculated using the following equation [26,27]: EE% = (GS added (10 mg) − Free GS in supernatant) GS added (10 mg) × 100…”

“…Recent studies highlighted that modern dressings with natural active compounds or HEs can be an ideal delivery system in wound healing [ 115 , 116 ]. In addition, other studies describing the incorporation of lipid vesicles in modern dressings for wound healing have shown promising results [ 117 , 118 , 119 , 120 ]. Although, a thorough search of the relevant literature yielded only a limited number of studies in which VNs with PCs were included in polymeric dressings for wound healing [ 31 , 94 ].…”

“…Chitosan (CTS), produced via the partial deacetylation of chitin, is a cationic amino polysaccharide obtained from squid pens, crustacean exoskeletons, and fungi [ 22 ]. CTS recently received much attention due to its unique attributes, such as its polycationic character, biocompatibility, in vivo biodegradability, mucoadhesiveness, and solubility at a low pH in an aqueous medium, wound healing, and antibacterial activity [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…The coating process is often facilitated by electrostatic interaction between the negative surface charge of the nanovesicles and the amino-acid-positive group of CTS [ 25 ]. The surface coating of nanovesicles by CTS has various benefits, such as boosting stability, prolonging drug release, increasing cellular absorption, and preventing drug leakage [ 22 ]. In the TDS area, CTS is attracting considerable interest, and several studies have suggested utilizing CTS as a strategy to improve TDS [ 26 , 27 ].…”
