Potential Triggering Factors of Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Abstract: The distributions of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) according to place of onset, degree of physical activity at onset and potential triggering factors were analyzed in 848 patients with ICH. Patients were grouped according to the presumed cause of ICH: hypertensive ICH, secondary ICH and ICH of undetermined origin. The influence of demographic and temporal factors on the relative frequency of events was also assessed. In 30% of the cases, ICH occurred during inactivity or sedentary activity, in 50% during ligh… Show more

“…Pressure, diet (e.g. high salt intake), hypertension, hyperglycemia, age and smoking can increase the risk of ICH [10][11][12][13][14]. In the present study, a majority of the patients were aged 50-70 years (66%).…”

“…Physical activity, including sexual intercourse, has been identified as a potential external trigger for ICH with an increase in blood pressure as the major contributing factor [32]. The role of physical activity as a trigger for ICH is further supported by the marked reduction in the incidence of ICH at night, when people are usually sleeping [31].…”

“…The body of literature on the topic is little more than a handful of case reports and small series [2,13,14,32,39]. While these reports bring attention to the topic, the small number of patients makes meaningful discussion and conclusion challenging.…”
