Potential Socioeconomic and Environmental Benefits and Beneficiaries of UAS Atmospheric Profiles from a 3D Mesonet

Abstract: In recent years, technological developments in engineering and meteorology have provided the opportunity to introduce innovative extensions to traditional surface mesonets through the application of UAS (unmanned aircraft systems). This new approach of measuring vertical profiles of weather variables by means of UAS in the atmospheric boundary layer, in addition to surface stations, has been termed a 3D mesonet.Technological innovations of a potential 3D mesonet have recently been described in the literature. … Show more

“…Sites are labelled with their regional identification code. Actions to be performed on each site are indicated by different symbols Fiebrich et al, 2021;Illingworth et al, 2015Illingworth et al, , 2019: miniradar (X-band), lidars, ceilometers, Doppler lidars, wind profilers, microwave radiometers, weather observing uncrewed aircraft systems,. Nowadays, all these instruments can be affordable by regional authorities and they should be considered during the design process (Frei, 2003).…”

“…The observational lack of a network can be filled not only by surface observations but also by ground‐based remote sensing observations (Brotzge et al, 2020; Fiebrich et al, 2021; Illingworth et al, 2015, 2019): mini‐radar (X‐band), lidars, ceilometers, Doppler lidars, wind profilers, microwave radiometers, weather observing uncrewed aircraft systems,.
